Maxwell Swimmers Experience Long Course Racing
A team of swimmers from Maxwell Swim Club recently competed in a Long Course event at the Wycombe Open Meet (October 2008). For most this was their first experience of racing in a 50 metre pool which as every swimmer will tell you is more
challenging than the Short Course version of the sport undertaken in a 25 metre pool.
This particular Meet was somewhat complicated as, in effect, two competitions were being held in tandem with different entry categories depending on the swimmers ability. These comprised a C Division for some, whilst those with faster entry times competed in the B Division category.
Of those who had races in the B Division category Nicole Bignell (13) had the greatest success winning a
Gold in the 200m Individual Medley in a time of 3:00.62, whilst also achieving a Silver for her performance in the 100m Freestyle. Golds were also won by Abbey Winterburn (11), with a time of 3:20.03 in the 200m Individual Medley; Bradley Alder (11) who completed the 100m Butterfly in 1:33.73; and Mollie Tatlow (12) in the 100m Breaststroke, with a winning time of 1:41.31. Ellie Picillo (9) won Silver in the 50m Butterfly, with this colour medal also going to Theo Cockrean (10) - 50m
Breaststroke; Emily Jones (11) - 50m Breaststroke; and Sophie Scott (13) - 100m Breaststroke. Megan Colborne (10) completed the Maxwell haul of medals in this Division with a Bronze for the 100m Breaststroke.
Within the C Division this was a good Meet for Jerome Parkins (12) who achieved a Gold in the 50m Backstroke in a time of 47.56 and complemented this with Silvers in the 200m Individual Medley, 50m Butterfly and 50m Breaststroke events. Rouxzan Cronje (11) won Gold in
the 100m Breaststroke finishing in a time of 1:55.67, whilst also picking up Bronze medals in the 50m Breaststroke and 50m Freestyle races. Thomas Gaskell (10) and Laura Jones (12) both won 50m Butterfly Golds, whilst Hope McIntyre (12) earned a Gold in the 100m distance for this event recording a time of 1:35.52. Hope also earned a Speeding Ticket in the 50m Butterfly, an event she completed in 38.11 seconds. Ben Aston (12) won Silver in the 100m Breaststroke and Bronze in the
50m Butterfly, whilst Theo Cockrean (10), Megan Colborne (10) and Olivia Woodrow (11), Emily Smith (12) and Nicole Bignell (13) also all won Silvers. Sophie Scott (13) achieved two Bronze medals, one in the 200m Individual Medley and the other in the100m Freestyle events.
As well as those achieving top three places, spare a thought for Thomas Stowe and Erin Alder (both 9) who both swam faster than the upper time limit allowed in their events and so went home without
medals. Thomas swam much faster than the limit in the 100m Freestyle recording an impressive 1:31.67 and also picked up a Speeding Ticket for his 1:00.96 in the 50m Breaststroke. Erin sprinted the 50m Freestyle to achieve a time of 45.49 seconds. Well done to all the Maxwell swimmers taking part at this Meet.
