New Season brings success for Maxwell Swimmers
Last weekend (27th & 28th September 2008), Aquavale was the venue for the Maxwell Open Meet, with swimmers from over a dozen clubs taking part, in what for most, was the first competition of the new season. It was a very successful
weekend for Maxwell Swim Club with 32 of its swimmers earning at least one medal.
Three girls and one boy each.won four Gold medals. Abi Bunce (13) achieved hers in the 100 and 200m Backstroke, the 100, Butterfly and the 100m Freestyle events the last of these being achieved in a time of 1:05.14. Abi supplemented this success with four Bronze medals in other events. Cristina Matheson (12) gained her four Golds in the 50 and 100m Breaststroke races, the 50m Butterfly and the 200m Individual Medley. As well as picking up a Bronze, Cristina was also awarded two Speeding Tickets for going faster than the time limit placed on this event. She did this in her 400m Individual Medley and Freestyle events, which she completed in 5:44.97 and 5:02.33 respectively. Sarah Turner (19) won her four Golds in the 50 and 100m Backstroke and the 100 and 400m Freestyle races. Teddy Loveridge (16) achieved Golds in the 50, 100 and 200m Buttterfly events and the 200m Breastroke which he finished in 2:39.23. He also won a Silver in the 100m Breaststroke and a Bronze in the 100m Backstroke.
Aaron Lee (13) was also impressive for the boys earning a Speeding Ticket in the 200m Freestyle in a time of 2:06.99, as well as picking up Golds in the 200 and 400m Individual Medley and 200m Breaststroke events and three other silvers besides. Tom Smith (18) achieved three Golds and a Silver, a feat matched by Adam Mayho (10) albeit in different events. Adam’s older brother Tom (15) also achieved a haul of four medals, two of which were Gold. This number of wins was equalled by Alfie Bones (12) through his first place finishes in the 100m Backstroke and Freestyle events the first of which he swam in 1:17.94. Alfie’s other achievements were two silvers and Bronze and a Speeding Ticket. The other Double Gold medal winner was David Witham (9) who achieved his first places in the 100m Backstroke and 200m Freestyle events. David also achieved two highly impressive personal bests in the 400m Freestyle and Individual Medley events with times of 5:41.26 and 6.55.60 respectively.
Other girls who performed well included Sarah Powell (16) who earned three Golds in the 400m Individual Medley and Freestyle and the 100m Butterfly and Corinne James (14) who won her 200m Butterfly event in a time of 2:41.75 and the 50m Breaststroke in 38.07. She also picked up four Silver medals in a range of other events. Georgina Parkins (15) won Golds in the 100 and 200m Backstroke as well as gaining three Silvers and a Speeding Ticket in the 200m Individual Medley which she completed in 2:31.44. Ellie Bunce (12) achieved two Speeding Tickets in the 200 and 400m Freestyle events making significant improvements on her previous personal bests to record times of 2:25.71 and 5:02.80 respectively as well as gaining a Gold in the 200m Breaststroke and a Silver in the 200m Backstroke.
Other Maxwell swimmers who won medals were James Ally (Silver and Bronze) Kenny Cliffe (Bronze), Zoe Denning (Bronze), Sophie Elgar (two Silvers), Anna Evison (Gold), Rhys Hylands (Gold, 2 Silvers and a Bronze), Laura Jones (2 Bronze), Emily Martin (2 Silvers and a Bronze), Hollie McIntyre (Gold, 2 Silvers and 2 Bronze), Matthew Nolte (Bronze), Liam O’Brien (Bronze), Kerris Patrick (Silver), Leah Picillo (Bronze), Jonny Quainton (Gold, Silver and 3 Bronze), Jake Scales (Bronze), Owain Spencer (Gold, Silver and a Bronze), Joshua Turner (2 Bronze) and Caitlin Wheatley (Gold).
