Exciting start to Counties with British Records Broken!!
Valentines day saw an exciting start to the Counties when Maxwell attended the 1500m & 800m Long Distance events at Oxford. The tensions started as 5 Maxwell boys were racing against each other, Jack Rowland led for nearly the whole race but was piped at the end by Tom Kaye, with Alfie Bones swimming a very impressive race and coming in third. The girls had an equally exciting race when 4 of the girls were in the same heat but on this occasion Caitlin Wheatley led the race and finished in
style. The senior boys and girls were also on form with Ollie Brewer and Hannah Askew taking the Senior Championship Titles, Rory Kemp took Silver at the Senior Championship and Ellie Bunce took the Bronze at the Junior Championship.
However - the highlight at the weekend was Lucy Chenery making an attempt to take the British Short Course Disability Record at 800m in category S14. To obtain this she required a 15 second PB. 3 Timekeepers were on standby to ensure the time met the ‘criteria’ for a British Record and Lucy swam a superb race and was very close to making the time but it was going to be very close. Unfortunately the timing pad did not work so for a tense few minutes it was not known if Lucy had achieved her goal or not. Maxwell are very pleased to announce that ‘subject to ratification’ Lucy did achieve the British Record in a time of 11:43.10 - well done Lucy!!!
Well done to all of the swimmers who attended the first long distance weekend - everyone swam extremely well and hopefully we will see many more good swims next weekend in the 400m races.
