Gary Binfield 1965-2008

Gary Binfield, the Counties’ only home produced Olympian has died following a massive heart attack whilst exercising on a tread mill at his home in the United States. Apparently there is no history of heart problems and post mortem is pending.

Gary’s family lived in Bletchley and his early swimming life was with Maxwell under Mick Wakeley but when the City of Milton Keynes SC was set up Gary moved there to work under the newly appointed professional head Coach, Clive Rushton. The sponsorship funding behind CMK ran out and Clive Rushton returned to Manchester taking, amongst others, Gary with him. Gary soon, however, returned to Maxwell from where he qualified for a university education in the United States where he was to continue his swimming training with Maxwell remaining his home club. Gary represented England in the Commonwealth games in 1986 and again in 1990. He represented Great Britain in the Seoul Olympics in 1988 where his Backstroke time of 2.03.20 remained an Oxon & North Bucks county record until just one week ago.

It is understood that the funeral will be held in the United States on Tuesday next 25th March.
Gary’s sister Sharon has asked that anybody wishing to send cards should send them to her in the first instance and she will pass them on to Gary’s widow.. Sharon’s address is
