Passport to Development
‘A scheme to enable a smooth transition for swimmers from local learn to swim schemes and competitive club swimming’
The aim of the ‘Maxwell Passport to Development’ scheme is to provide a structured pathway for talented swimmers within learn to swim programmes wishing to develop their full potential within a structured swimming club environment.
Background
Maxwell is an accredited Swim 21 Performance Club with a long established history of producing top level swimmers. The Club aims to enable swimmers to reach their full potential and compete to the highest level they can reach. Its teaching, training and competition programmes are built on the principle requirements of the Long Term Athlete Development programme, which is the cornerstone for all competitive and performance swimming development.
At Maxwell, talented swimmers have the opportunity to develop their skills and follow the development pathway towards ultimately the British Swimming World-Class programmes.
The Maxwell Passport to Development scheme is designed to help put individual swimmer needs first by creating a mutually co-operative relationship between Maxwell Swimming Club and ‘Serco’s Swim Life Scheme (at the Aqua Vale)’ to assist talented swimmers in fulfilling their potential. In doing so the scheme aims to help smooth the transition of swimmers learning to swim in Level 6 (Mighty Waves) and upwards to level 12 (Surf Stars) into Maxwell’s Advanced Lessons. This provides a pathway to future development within swimming and possible success at County, District, National and International level.
How does the scheme work?
Briefly the scheme is a four-step process designed to provide a smooth transition for the swimmer from their existing lessons to Maxwell by:
1, Selection: Their Swimming Teacher in conjunction with a Maxwell coach will identify potential candidates using a set of guidelines that swimmers will generally need to have achieved before they can benefit from Maxwell’s Advanced Lessons. This will occur at the start of the term in week 2 of the programme.
2, Preparation: From week 2 a limited number of swimmers are selected and from this period through to the end of the 10 week programme (term) the swimmer’s current Teacher will work in consultation with the designated Maxwell coach. This enables the swimmer and their Teacher to become conversant with the type of skill work and technique that will be developed further at Maxwell.
3, Transition: Upon the swimmers end of term assessment the Maxwell coach will decide in conjunction with their Swimming Teacher if they are now ready to join Maxwell’s Advanced Lessons or if they need another term with their current lessons.
The possibility of joint swimming at both Maxwell and their current lessons is also feasible if it is felt that it will be in the swimmers best interest for their future development.
4, Completion: The swimmer joins Maxwell’s Advanced Lessons on 1 – 2 sessions per week dependant on their ability level and then the swimmer starts the transition into competitive swimming in a friendly and FUN environment.
What will it cost?
The cost of Maxwell Advanced lessons are Ł29.74 per calendar month.
This entitles the child to 2x 1 hour sessions of swimming per week with between 2 and 4 qualified ASA Level 2 Teachers working with this group. The current ratio is 6 swimmers per teacher.
The Maxwell Head Coach visits this Advance Lesson group regularly and advises teachers and occasionally teaches the lesson where he runs a session focusing on correct technique and skills.
Maxwell’s Membership fee is currently included within the monthly fees but in addition swimmers will need to pay the mandatory ASA membership fee of Ł3.50 (non-competitive) or Ł17.00 (competitive) per year (this is the case when joining any club within sport)
How much commitment do I have to give?
At Maxwell we are very flexible as we appreciate all the different activities most children and their families participate in after each school day and during the weekends - However for improvements and progression to be made the children will need to come to their lesson/training regularly.
Where do these Advance Lessons take place?
These occur at the Aylesbury Boys Grammar School pool (4x25m pool) and once progress is made swimmers will soon find themselves training at the Aqua Vale and Stadium pools in Aylesbury.
A unique two-way partnership
Working together and sharing resources will enable the Swim Life scheme at the AquaVale to continually raise the standards of their lessons through a close co-operative relationship between the Maxwell coaching staff and the Learn to swim teachers and co-ordinator. This will not only develop the selected swimmers and their teachers but the other swimmers within the programme will benefit from this scheme through improved skill work.
