Club Committee Q and A’s
If you have clicked on this link you are probably thinking about what you can do to become involved with one of the countries top swimming Clubs!
So here are a few Q&A’s relating to what is involved in becoming a Committee member.
Q. What exactly does the committee do?
A. The committee is responsible for running the Club of behalf of its members in line with the Club constitution. Basically this means that all the financial and administration of the Club handled by the committee as well as organising such events like Open Meets and Swim Camps.
Q. If I joined the committee would I have a job?
A. Yes, committee members do have distinct roles an responsibilities, its not simply a case of turning
up for the occasional meeting. (for an idea of the roles see the committee page)
Q. How much time will it take up?
A. Well this does depend on the role – some by there very nature will be more demanding on time than others. Having said that much can be done when swimmers are training!
Q. I don’t feel that I want to take on a major role (at not least to begin with) but am interested in being involved how can I do this?
A. The Club constitution allows the
committee to co-opt members on. This enables members to attend committee meetings and be involved in club operations however on major decisions this position is “none voting”. It is a good way of gaining an understanding of how the Club operates and contributing through working and assisting other Committee members.
Q. How to I become involved.
A. Well first contact the Chairman so that you can discuss what it is you wish to do and how that can then be best achieved. Second attend the forthcoming AGM where you can be formally elected or co-opted onto the committee.
Q. A friend mentioned that if I get elected on to the Committee I can become liable for any debts the Club has.
A. The club does not own any significant assets and so must operate on a cash reserve to ensure creditors are paid (primarily comprises of pool hire and Coaching costs). The Club maintains a reserve of several operating months to cover any unforeseen eventualities. If the Club was to see this reserve become severely depleted then either major cost/income
restructuring would have to occur or else the club may be wound up, either way the Club would not be allowed to enter a debt situation.
Please remember that the Club can only operate through volounteers such as you. Its extremly rewarding to ensure the Club is the vehicle for swimmers of all abilities reach their full potential.
