More Maxwell success at the Bath Speedo Grand Prix
On 5th, 6th and 7th Dec 2003, Maxwell’s senior swimmers were competing in the Bath Speedo Grand Prix. 
In the first sessions, Fri AM heats, Hana Capstick set a new personal best time in 100m butterfly, swimming 1:04.77. The time seeded her 3rd going into the final. In the mens event, Craig Gibbons swam impressively to be seeded 4th into the final with a time of 59.28. Gibbons also competed in the 50m free, making 24.31 which seeded him fastest going into the finals’ session. Edward Downes competed in two events, and has secured himself places in the both finals. In the 200 individual medley, Downes swam 2:16.45 placing him in the 5th position for the finals while in the 100m breaststroke he was also seeded 5th with time 1:10.93.
Fridays finals’ session resulted in huge improvements from the heats’ swims. Edward Downes finished in the 2nd position in 200m individual medley, improving his heat’s swim by some 5 seconds, swimming 2:11.47. In the 100m breaststroke Downes also improved his time. This time by over one second, swimming 1:09.01 which placed him in the 5th position. Hana Capstick also improved in her swim. Capstick finished 100m butterfly race in 1:04.09, gaining her 3rd position. Craig Gibbons was 5th in 100m butterfly with slight improvement in time (59.24) and was 2nd in 50m freestyle with time 24.25.
On Sat AM, heats’ session, saw more great performances from Maxwell’s swimmers resulting in more final’s placings. The final’s session was started on a great note when Capstick finished 3rd in 200m freestyle, with a time of 2:08.51 (a personal best time). Gibbons’ 200m freestyle was also a personal best time (1:53.48) which secured him the first position at the meet. Gibbons turned in 6th position at the first 100m and has made his move on the 3rd length. With an excellent second 100m he stormed through the field to finish first. Downes too, had an excellent swim in 400 individual medley. He also swam a personal best time 4:41.17 and finished in 2nd place. In the 50m butterfly events, Gibbons finished in 3rd position (25.93), Downes was 7th (27.84) for men while Capstick was 5th (women’s).
The third day was also full of successes for the swimmers. The final’s session was the most fruitful of the meet for Maxwell. Hana Capstick won 200m butterfly event in time of 2:19.29, beating Laura Chase (a British Junior Team member) by just 0.1 sec. Gibbons won his best event, 100m freestyle, with time 52.22. Downes finished just outside medals position, coming 4th in 200m butterfly, swimming his best time of 2:11.73. He improved his position just 15 min later, swimming 50m breaststroke in 31.54 and finishing in the 3rd position.
