2005 Oxon and North Bucks County Champioships (Part 3)

The recent completion of the Oxfordshire and North Bucks county Swimming championships has shown why the Maxwell Swim Club is now regarded as one of the best swimming clubs in the country.

Over four weekends the most talented swimmers in the county have battled it out for honours in venues around the area. The last day of the meet was held at the Aqua Vale pool in Aylesbury which is home to the Maxwell club.

Overall there are 42 senior championships and 42 junior championships to be decided, but as each event is divided into age groups winners as well, this means that there are plenty of opportunities for younger swimmers to show what they are made of.

On the last three days of competition Maxwell added to their already impressive haul of medals by gaining 54 first places and a massive 196 top six places.

Overall during the four weekends Maxwell swimmers won 95 first places and 340 top six places. Head Coach, Kevin brooks, said; ‘This is a great achievement for a small club, and one we will certainly be building on in the next few months.’

The juniors performed extremely well to take 10 of the 42 championships. Craig Oliver won the 50m and 100m freestyle events, with James Tucker winning the 200m freestyle. Craig topped the 50m breastroke, while Adam Brown took the 100m breaststroke. Hannah Askew took both the 100m and 200m freestyle titles as well as the 100m butterfly title. The 50m butterfly was won by Natasha Mason. The girls topped off their meet by taking the 100m freestyle junior title

At the end of the championships Maxwell gained more senior county champions than any other club. Ed Downes won 50m, 100m and 200m freestyle, with Rob Andrews taking the 400m and 800m freestyle events. In the breastroke, Ed won the 50m and 100m events as well as the 100m butterfly. Laura Beechey came home first in the 50m, 100m and 200m freestyle, while Sarah Turner won both the 400m and 800m freestyle. The 50m and 100m backstroke titles were won by Laura while Sarah took the 200m backstroke, The 50m and 100m butterfly were also won by Laura with Hana Capstick winning the 200m butterfly. Laura also won the 100m Individual Medly. Maxwell’s men won both the 50m and 100m freestyle relay and the women topped that by not only winning the 50 and 100m freestyle medley, but also the 100m medley.

Out of the 42 senior events, Maxwell took top place in no less than 25 events. Adding to the recent accreditation of the club by British Swimming as a ‘Performance’ level club and the appointment of one of the best young coaches in the country, this is a brilliant start for 2005. Maxwell are now rightly considered to be one of the best swimming clubs in Britain and the strength of the youngsters coming through the ranks is indicative of great things ahead!
