Ed takes Gold at the
Summer Nationals

The 2003 National Youth Championships  held in Sheffield were a storming success for 16 year old Ed Downes as he took apart a quality field to convincingly win the 200m Individual Medley event for 15/16 year olds with time 2:10.61. This personal best  time is also a consideration time for the Great Britain Youth Team for 2003/4 season.

Ed also took the 100m breaststroke bronze medal in a personal best time of 1:06.91 and in 200m butterfly finished in 8th position with another best time 2:12.79.

The 2003 European Junior Championships were held in Glasgow, where Maxwell’s Craig Gibbons was competing in three events, 4x100 Freestyle Relay, 4x100 Medley Relay and individual 100m Freestyle for the Great Britain Team.

Both relays finished in 3rd position, giving Gibbons a chance to come back with two bronze medals from this high level junior meet.

Craig also performed strongly in his 100m Freestyle individual swim. By achieving new personal bests in both heats and semi’s Craig became the first UK junior to make the 100 Free final for a number of years. By achieving yet another P.B. Gibbons finished in 7th position, with a  time of 51.36 sec.

The 2003 National Youth Championships also saw further Maxwell swimmers achieve fantastic results.

Hana Capstick (16) competed in 16/17 age group. Her best performances were 100 & 200m butterfly. In the 200 butterfly, Capstick beat her best time by 3 seconds, finishing the race in 2:26.30 and finished in 15th position. In 100m butterfly final , Hana finished in 9th position with a great time of 1:05.84.

Paul Turner (17) swimming in 17/18 age group competed in the 100m and 200m backstroke. Turner yet again made the Finals for both events and in the 200m event  finished in 6th position in his best time 2:11.79. The 100m backstroke event saw Turner finish in 9th position in 1:00.89.

Sarah Turner (14) was swimming in the 14/15 age group in the 400m freestyle. Sarah swam her personal best time of 4:37.67, but just missed the final.

Maxwell was also represented in two men’s relays, 4x200 freestyle, and 4x100 medley. In the 4x200 Maxwell was represented by Edward Downes, David Smith, Paul Turner and Adam Hilliard, while in the 4x100 medley, it was Paul Turner (backstroke), Adam Hilliard (breaststroke), Edward Downes (butterfly) and Gregory McBirney (freestyle). In the both relays, Maxwell finished in the top 15.

Laura Beechey and Suzanne Tyson (18) qualified for this years Senior National finals,  In 50m backstroke Laura finished in the silver medal position, swimming her best time 0:30,41, while in the 100m backstroke (1:05.40) the bronze medal escaped her by one place.  Suzanne cracked 35 seconds in the 50m Breaststroke event just missing out on a final place in 34.98.
